Fall & Winter 2014 Beauty Trends

With Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week already underway for spring and summer 2015 and the first day of fall steadily fast approaching on September 22, now is a better time than ever to review the top trends for fall and winter 2014 beauty.

Skin

Skin stays illuminated for fall and winter, never falling flat or dull. Bronzer is even welcomed this season using it to help sculpt the face. Highlighter used on cheekbones warms up the skin to not look as frigid as it may be outside. Natural shades of blush are used mostly now, or a varied shade of merlot for those deep winter months.

Eyes

Color is no longer just for the spring and summer months. Any shade of blue on the—either applied as a shadow, thick winged liner, or smudged along the bottom lash line would make clients perfectly on trend. Metallic silver, bronze and gold liquid shadows and liners are a must for winter. Match clients’ eyelids to the way snow sparkles and they’ll be sure to shine at any holiday party.

Lips

The look for lips this season is very much dependent on what’s happening with the eyes. With so much drama happening with eyes, it’s best to keep lips subtle. If it is a simple black wing lining the eyes then go for lipstick shades of burgundy, velvet purple or even classic red.

Acne is defined as a skin disease that occurs as a result of inflamed or infected sebaceous glands in the skin – when the follicles, dead skin cells and sebum (a combination of squalane, wax esters andtriglycerides) get trapped in pores and become infected with bacteria. While there are many theories as to the exact cause of acne, we do know there are a number of triggers including: hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, medications, stress, poor hygiene, and genetics. The key to proper treatment is proper diagnosis of the root cause for your client.

Common Acne Triggers

Hormones – oil production is regulated heavily by hormones, specifically testosterone, which stimulates the development of sebaceousfollicles and attached oil glands. This explains why acne is most common during puberty, pregnancy, menstrual cycles and menopause.
Stress – stress is one of the top triggers of acne as it stimulates the adrenal glands to produce more cortisol, which can cause excess sebum and inflammation. Acne flare-ups can occur anywhere form 14 days to one month after the stress response.
Medication – the hormones (adrenals) may be affected by some medications and drug use and can spur on blemishes.
Nutrition – alcohol, caffeine and foods with iodides (salt, processed and fast foods, MSG, dairy in excess) can trigger existing acne.
Face cleansing – when oil builds up on the skin, bacteria will form, which creates blemishes. Sleeping in makeup, along with exposure to debris from the day, sets up a perfect opportunity for more bacteria. Teaching your clients to cleanse properly and regularly will often eliminate their acne issues.
Skin irritants – detergents, fabric softeners, certain shampoos and conditioners, and fragrances or dyes can irritate existing acne conditions.
Drying – overuse of certain drying skin care products may cause the skin to over-produce sebum.
Genetics – some may be predisposed to acne based on certain genes that are passed along, but it is believed it is polygenic, or a grouping of genes as opposed to one singular gene.

Be sure to talk to clients about the role lifestyle plays in the skin’s health. It is important that they eliminate as many antagonizers as possible, adopt a healthy, clean diet and reduce exposure to skin irritants by changing pillowcases often, thoroughly rinsing laundry to get rid of excess soap, and using healthy skin care products. What Are Hormones?

Hormones are chemicals secreted by cells or glands, which act as messengers that are sent out from one part of the body to signal cells in other parts of the body. Hormones control and regulate the body’s internal environment by regulating metabolism, controlling the reproductive cycle, inducing hunger and cravings, stimulating or inhibiting growth, and preparing the body for changes such as puberty, childbirth, or menopause. They are often released directly into the bloodstream, but may also be secreted into ducts.

The Effects of Inflammation

Inflammation is a process by which the body’s white blood cells and chemicals protect us from infection such as bacteria and viruses. However, inflammation is also the single greatest precipitator of aging and age-related diseases and does damage by stimulating free radicals, which accelerates aging by attaching to and damaging cells. With acne, the stimulation of the oil glands, brought on by pro-inflammatory responses, can result in clogged pores and an increase in pro-inflammatory fatty acids. Studies have shown that there is a connection between sugar and inflammation in the body.

The Effects of Stress on Hormones

Other factors to consider are the effects that stress has on hormones. Systemically, stress stimulates hormones which can affect acne breakouts. Elevated hormone levels prior to menstruation, or excessive androgen production produced by the adrenal glands, can make acneic conditions worse in both men and women. Women are more affected than men by pro-inflammatory responses related to cortisol and insulin and the effects of androgens in the body. A woman’s androgens are synthesized in the adrenal glands; therefore, they are more susceptible to adrenal hormone stimulation and more prone to inflammatory responses in the body. Hyperandrogenism may be caused by disorders such as polycystic ovarian disease, which can indicate insulin resistance with acne patients.

Ethnic Skin Care & Tips

Many people think that ethnic skin poses the greatest challenge when it comes to skin treatment. In my practice, I advise clients on how to address their most common skin care issues, which include variations in the following categories: Pigmentation, pore size, skin thickness, oil production and hydration level. To better understand these variations, we must understand the biology of the “how” and “why” of ethnic skin care in order to responsibly counteract skin weaknesses and bolster skin strengths.

Pigmentation is the color of the skin which is dependent upon the amount of melanin contained in the skin

Biology – Dark skin contains the most melanin. Melanin helps to control body temperature and protect against skin cancer. However, ethnic skin is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation as melanin levels increase, and it most visible in medium to light tones of Black, Hispanic and Asian skin.
Treatment – Prevention is the best treatment for hyperpigmentation in ethnic skin, and it is best achieved using a good sunscreen and not picking at or over-treating the skin. While darker skin naturally diffuses the UV rays, it does not prevent sun burns or lessen the risk of skin cancer. Broad spectrum sun protection is always required when ethnic skin is exposed to the sun’s rays for extended periods of time.
Once discoloration has occurred, progressive rather than aggressive pigmentation reduction is in order. Overuse of bleaching and peeling products on ethnic skin will only create additional and permanent skin damage. Use caution when experimenting with products on melanin rich ethnic skin as it may trigger discoloration for years.

Pore size is the circumstance of the pore as it appears on the skin’s surface

Biology – Oversized pores cause ethnic skin to look unrefined while small pores make it appear sallow and dull. Pore size is related in strong part to the skin’s sebum or oil production. Oversized pores in ethnic skin especially have a propensity to form blackheads.
Treatment – Contrary to popular belief that skin bracing astringents or ice will shrink the pores, these approaches merely tense the skin temporarily. Only through regular exfoliation and pore cleansing will pore profiles be reduced. Pores enlarge as they near the skin’s surface. The “Top Horney Layer” is comprised of several layers of dead skin, and it is rigid in nature compared to the supple protected tissue beneath it. By gently removing this surface layer and exposing the supple lower layer, the appearance of pore size is minimized. Top layer exfoliation in ethnic skin must be balanced in order to minimize excessive oil production and, in extreme cases, avoid the damage that causes hyperpigmentation.
